Berry Whirligig Recipe

Ingredients:
1/2 cup: Sugar,
1 cup: Water,
2 tbsp: Cornstarch,
3 cup: Fresh or frozen,
1/2 tsp: Salt,
Blackberries,
1/4 tsp: Ground cinnamon,
Or a mixture of berries,

WHIRLIGIGS:
1 cup: All-purpose flour,
1/4 cup: Butter or margarine --,
2 tsp: Baking powder,
Softened,
1/2 tsp: Salt,
1/2 cup: Sugar,
2 tbsp: Shortening,
1 tsp: Lemon peel, grated
1 each: Egg, lightly beaten
1/4 tsp: Ground cinnamon,
2 tbsp: Milk,

Directions:
In a saucepan, combine sugar. cornstarch, salt and cinnamon. Add
water. Cook until mixture boils and thickens. Stir in berries and
cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Pour into a greased 8-in. square
baking pan. Set aside. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a
bowl. Cut in shortening until coarse crumbs form. In another bowl,
mix egg and milk. Add to flour mixture; mix to make a smooth dough.
Knead for several minutes. Roll into a 12-in. x 8-in. rectangle.
Spread with butter. Combine sugar, lemon peel and cinnamon; sprinkle
over dough. Starting at a long end, roll up; seal edges. Cut into
nine slices. Place slices over berry mixture. Bake at 400 deg. for
22-25 minutes or until golden brown. Yield: 9 servings
